Even if you consider yourself a Facebook veteran, there might be some new features and tweaks of old features that might have slipped your attention. Did you know that you could help people pronounce your name or keep that nasty break-up on the down-low?
Some of the tools the Facebook team has been playing around with aren’t that well-known, not even by those millions of users who spend a lot of their day on the time-waster. See if you knew about these simple ways that your Facebook experience can be enhanced with.
What do you mean your name is Adecyn with a y?
Facebook reports that U.S. and Canada users only cover about 17 percent of the overall usership, which means that 83 percent are using English or any other of the 80 languages supported by the platform. With such a large number it’s easy to get someone’s name wrong.
That’s why Facebook decided to offer a name pronunciation guide, under the “About” section of your profile. If none of Facebook’s suggestions actually fit the pronunciation of your name, you can type in your own.
Disposable password
Do you find yourself in need of logging in on Facebook from a public computer? With all the malicious software that might be bugging it, you don’t really want to type in your password, and Facebook knows that.
Requesting temporary one is something that you can actually do by texting “otp” to 32665. The eight-character passcode they send you will work for the next 20 minutes and then become unavailable.
Unsubscribe
Turning off annoying notifications has never been easier. Anyone who has ever belonged to a particularly chatty group knows that it can get pretty spammy pretty quick. Clicking on the “notifications” little globe icon and then on the “X” next to the individual notification will help you get your peace and quiet back.
Breaking bad news on the down-low
Announcing the beginning of a relationship, an engagement or a special wedding day on Facebook has become rather popular. And why should it be, when all the likes, congrats and love pour in adding to your joy. But not all the happiness lasts forever, and if that happens, no couple wants to announce it to their entire list of friends.
Thankfully, Facebook now provides a way for you to mark the end of a relationship without anyone knowing. If you go again in the “About” section, check the “Family and Relationships” category: you’ll see a gray little icon states who sees your current relationship status (Friends or Public is most likely your current setting) Change it to “Only me,” and then you’ll be safe.
