Red, the leader of the addictive “Angry Birds” game, has been nominated by the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to an honorary U.N. ambassador.
Soon to be featured in “The Angry Birds Movie” with his friends, Red is supposed to appeal to the younger demographic and encourage them to go “green.” The campaign is part of a wider effort of tackling climate change.
On Friday, the United Nations chose Red to be the inspiration for people to start acting for the benefit of our environment and “achieve a sustainable and happier future for humanity.”
Delegating Red as an honorary U.N. ambassador is meant to bridge the gap between climate change management and the people, both of whom are concerned with the humanity’s well-being on Earth.
The partnership falls in line with the message of the International Day of Happiness, which will take place on Sunday, March 20.
When asked why Red was chosen, the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said the Angry Birds were enjoyed by millions of people around the globe, and now it was time for the beloved characters to help make the world a safer place.
It’s also a play on words, as Ban said how proud he is the U.N. to “give Red a reason to go Green.” He added that U.N. way of celebrating the International Day of Happiness couldn’t have had a better representative to increase public awareness about climate change.
For this campaign, the U.N. Foundation and the U.N. Development Program have teamed up with Sony Pictures Entertainment. The overall idea is to urge people around the world to make the Angry Birds happy by starting various climate actions.
As people start joining the campaign, the U.N. encourages people to share their pledges and photos on social media and use the fitting hashtag #AngryBirdsHappyPlanet.
Some examples of how people can participate in the action are starting to conserve water, recycle, and ride public transportation instead of a personal car. Using the same unifying hashtag, people can share tips and idea on how to make the world a more sustainable place every day.
But what are Red’s Responsibilities? Taking on his new role of U.N. ambassador, the red bird will start a virtual world tour on Monday. Red’s primary purpose is to emphasize the kind of actions people can take to slow down climate change.
The animated character will go to Paris and start his tour in New York. Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Maya Rudolph, the voice actors for “The Angry Birds” movie were present at the launch of the campaign.
