Utah ‘Mountain Man’ gets 10-year jail term on Burglary, Theft charges

June 9, 2014 Posted by Contributor

After evading arrest for over six years, a Utah man was finally sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison by a court on Monday.

Troy James Knapp, popularly known as Mountain man, was arrested by the Utah police last year for ransacking cabins across a wide swath of Utah.

He was named ‘Mountain Man’ as he trekked hundreds of miles alone on his snowshoes with a rifle slung over his shoulder.

Continuing with his solitary ways, he defended himself in court after firing his defense attorney.

He was arrested under the charges of a host of state and federal burglary and theft.

In the court, Knapp agreed to a plea deal on federal weapons charges that stem from him firing shots at agents during his capture in April 2013.

46-year-old accused will be presented before a state judge on Monday. During the court hearing, he is scheduled to take plea deals from seven Utah counties where he has been charged with burglary-related crimes.

Meanwhile, the details of the plea deals have not been disclosed. The sources, however, say he’s charged with more than 40 burglary-related crimes dating back to 2009.

“Knapp has been cooperating with authorities since agreeing to the plea deal this spring, helping them find 16 weapons he had stored away in four locations in four different counties. That included 13 handguns, two rifles and 1 one shotgun, U.S. Assistant Attorney Matthew Bell said.

According to the authorities, Knapp began a string of cabin burglaries across southern and central Utah in 2007.

Sanpete County Attorney Brody Keisel said, Knapp is set to take individual plea deals for each county, but prosecutors in the seven counties have been working together to make sure everybody is on board with the package of deals.”

Knapp is charged in Beaver, Emery, Garfield, Iron, Kane, Sanpete and Sevier counties.
