Overwaitea Food Group has recalled Ripple Creek Farm brand Hickory Smoked Spiral Sliced Ham suspecting a possible Listeria contamination.
So far no cases of illnesses have been reported.
The product has been sold to consumers in both BC and Alberta, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said.
Hams of this type labeled with a best before date of “2014 FEBRUARY 13″ are affected by the recall.
CFIA has also alerted the consumers to check if they have bought the recalled products from the stores. In that case, they are advised to return the product to the stores or simply discard them.
The listeria-contaminated products may not look or smell foul but can cause severe illness. You may suffer from fever, vomiting, nausea, headache, muscle aches and stiffness in neck. Pregnant women, children, elderly and those with weak immune systems are at higher risk.
CFIA in a press release said,“ The pregnant women may be severely hit with this infection. The infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.”
In 2008, a listeriosis outbreak in Canada claimed 22 lives out of 57 confirmed cases.
