A new study suggests that women looking for a life partner unconsciously stay away from flashy men. Men who show off their assets like a sports car or a ripped body are not perceived as husband material by most women, researchers found.
In fact, driving a flashy car is a turn-off for most men as well, the recent research suggests. Both sexes reported seeing the drivers of extravagant vehicles as more sexually promiscuous and less likely to be reliable life partners.
Scientists recommend people interested in marriage to not buy a sports car. Instead, they should pick a low-profile car that seems more sensible.
In the study, female participants said that men driving a Porsche Boxster were more likely to look for a one-night stand than men driving a Honda Civic, for instance.
Study authors were shocked to learn that the previous theory that the ostentatious display of a man’s resources makes the man more attractive to women is partially wrong.
Show-Offs Are Not Husband Material
Unlike women, men are more likely to show off their wealth, but women who are impressed by flashy men are less likely to look for something serious. Study authors also found that women looking for one-night stands are more likely to be attracted by a man’s physical qualities.
The new study sought to analyze how men’s display of their resources affect their potential partners. Researchers interviewed 233 people about the perceived parenting skills, attractiveness, dating, and marriage prospects of two men driving either a sports car (Flashy Dave) or a more modest car (Frugal Dan).
Both men spent $27,000 on their cars, but Flashy Dave bought a used Porsche Boxster and equipped it with a new sound system, new paint, and bigger wheels. By contrast, Frugal Dan bought a new Honda Civic based on reliability and efficiency.
Women rated Flashy Dave only 43 on a scale in which 80 points means the man is husband material, with Frugal Dan getting 67 points.
