Hillary Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin and disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner announced their divorce, but they plan to settle the issue outside court to spare their underage son of needless embarrassment.
- On Wednesday, the estranged couple announced their decision of moving the proceedings outside court.
- They said the details of a public separation would just embarrass their 6-year-old son.
Weiner is currently serving 21 months in jail after being convicted of sexting an underage girl. He and his estranged wife announced their agreement on the same day their case was supposed to be brought before the Manhattan Supreme Court.
Abedin’s lawyer said that the divorce will be settled privately in order to have a “minimal impact” on the parties’ child. The court confirmed that the case was discontinued through parties’ agreement.
Abedin and Weiner Want to Keep Divorce Details Private
Weiner’s estranged wife filed for divorce in May, but the case’s initial “contested” status means that there was a dispute between the pair. As of recently, they gave the divorce “uncontested” status which means that they will no longer have to appear in court.
Uncontested matrimonial cases allow both parties to keep details like child custody private.
Abedin is currently in the hot seat after President Trump called for her imprisonment after the State Department published the correspondence between her and her boss Clinton that federal investigators had found on Weiner’s laptop in late 2016.
One piece of good news for the embattled Clinton aide is that Weiner can cite “spousal privileges” and refuse to testify against her. Experts agree that the couple should stay united at least when it comes to the FBI investigation.
Weiner’s attorney couldn’t be reached with a request for comment.
