Previous research showed how people should choose sweet potatoes over the classic white ones. Now, scientists found another breed with dozens of health benefits, namely purple potatoes.
Vegetables in general reduce the risk of cancer
Potatoes can have different uses and benefits, but eating purple potatoes can be vital in humans’ fight against the most dreadful diseases. A recent research published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry suggests that eating purple potatoes can reduce the risk of colon cancer.
Researchers tested a diet rich in purple potatoes on pigs, and saw how their bodies reacted to the substances present in the vegetable. The components in the potatoes reduced the levels of a protein which favorized the development of colon cancer, namely interleukin-6.
Previous studies also suggested choosing a diet rich in plants and vegetables could reduce the colon cancer risk. Now, researchers are trying to find out how typical components usually found in vegetables can influence the development of cancer. Coming up with such an answer might help us create more effective treatments against cancer.
What are purple potatoes?
Purple potatoes might not look to appetizing on the outside, but their inside pulp is colored in a vibrant purple. Many people choose it for its aspect, and for the splash of color it adds to dishes, but the truth is the vegetable is really healthy. In fact, all colorful vegetables are higher in nourishing substances than the white ones.
Purple potatoes have plenty of anti-inflammatory substances and antioxidants, and a lot more than regular white potatoes. Apart from helping with the colon cancer risk, the vegetable can preserve one’s health, and keep other ailments away.
