Facebook keeps trying to overthrow Snapchat as the messenger app of choice for most users in the US. As such, the social network company keeps emulating their own versions of Snapchat’s most popular features. Their latest attempt consists in the feature known as Messenger Camera which turns text into filters for your photos and videos.
The new Facebook Messenger Camera feature enables users to create an unlimited number of unique filters for their photos and videos. The algorithm takes anything you type in the app and then transforms it into various forms of filters such as images and words with artsy and goofy fonts you can add to your photos and videos and then share them with your friends.
Th Messenger Camera algorithm can even recognize the meaning of your text in up to 15 different languages. If so, then the app will offer up filters with art and images related to what you meant to say. Additionally, the Messenger Camera offers the app’s various other filters to easily past them on your photos and videos. These include the augmented reality selfie lenses, masks, various transfers, filters, and art, which will enhance your conversation with your friends.
The Messenger Camera is easily accessible, being available only tap away from the main interface or from a conversation. The feature is Facebook’s way to emphasize the fact that an increasing number of conversations are starting from photos and videos. It also aligns with Facebook’s vision where video is the future of communication and not just through text.
The Messenger Camera will provide users with more flexibility and creative tools, building on the fact that there are around 2.5 billion videos, photo, and emoji shared on the app every day. This user behavior receives the support it deserves thanks to the Messenger Camera feature, which is starting to roll out today for all users on both iOS and Android. Facebook will even release holiday-themed effects for the Messenger Camera to every user by December 21st.
Overall, the Messenger Camera is a welcome addition to the app as it manages to enhance and augment our words rather than completely replace them with art clips. It enables users to test out their creativity when chatting with their friends or trying to make new ones.
