The United States Drug Enforcement Administration decided to reduce the amount of prescription drugs in 2017. While the officials are hoping this will have a positive impact on the country, pharmacists are concerned that the decision will affect their businesses. It seems that the amount of every opiate medication will be reduced by 25 percent.
The biggest problem in the United States is that there are more than 6 500 000 Americans who take too many prescription drugs. Most of them become addicted or take them even when they do not need to. Prescription drugs are used more than cocaine and heroin.
DEA officials also explained that there are less legal prescriptions for these drugs, while illegal use is more common than ever. They have been tried for years to explain practitioners, pharmacists, manufacturers, and the public about the dangers of opioid meds.
Even though we rely on medications to treat our pain and make us feel better, we should know about the disadvantages of prescription drugs. An important question would be: had all the drugs been tested before being sold on the market?
There are drug companies that just want to see their products sold and they are not so honest with the FDA about their research. Not even your doctor can tell you for sure if a drug was tested as it should have been. Moreover, even when the companies are honest they test only healthy individuals, without taking into consideration the people who are more vulnerable.
There are also a lot of teenagers or adults that do not want prescription drugs for their main goal, but they are looking for the side-effects. There were cases when teens took too pills and end up in the hospital or even died. People have access to so many pills that they forget what was their main purpose and use them just to feel something different or to impress their friends.
The important thing to know is that prescription drugs can really improve your life if you take them at the right time. If use them carefully and just when you really have a health problem, there should be no problem. However, doctors should make sure that their patients are not overusing these products. They should also explain that only the person who has the name on the bottle should take the drug. Even if a doctor prescribes a medication, that does not mean that everyone can use it without a problem.
