Android Update: Change Work and Home Icons on Google Maps

“OK Google, take me to my pirate ship!”

Even though it’s still technically impossible to say that to your Android phone when you want it to navigate you home, but Google now allows you to set your home icon to a pirate ship if you want.

You can totally tell people you work in a yellow submarine or live in a lighthouse, and thanks to the Google Maps latest update and its whimsical icons, you also have the proof to back that claim up.

Google wants you to personalize your home and work addresses, so the new stickers will help your map to be “a little more you.”

What’s more, you can label virtually any destination you want to get push notifications about, with traffic updates and travel times to the airport during rush hour, for example.

You have plenty of designs to choose from if you want to customize your home’s icon, so if a lighthouse is not your thing, you can pick a submerged vessel, an RV, a barn, a castle, and even a dragon.

Google included fewer choices for the icon that replaces the boring briefcase in a circle. There are still some good and colorful options for your workplace label, such as a skyscraper, a crane, a windmill, and more.

To change your icons, add your home and work address into Google Maps. To do that, open the app and swipe right from the edge. Hit “Your Places” and if the addresses are already added, just tap on Home or Work, swipe up and tap the “Change icon.” After that, just peruse through the available icons.

Labels can also be managed in the “Your Places” menu, as well. Check out your saved locations, maps you’ve created and places you have visited.

For now, Google doesn’t allow users to add their customized icons for labels, but it seems like a natural step to pursue, so just be patient.

This is not the first time Google Maps has changed its look for the home and work locations. Last fall, the service was flooded with Star Wars-themed icons as Google partnered with Disney for a promotional campaign for The Force Awakens.

For a brief period, you could say you lived on the Death Star if your path of choice led you to the dark side. This update is already available on Android, but Google didn’t mention if or when it will arrive on iOS as well.
