What a drag to keep on opening the door of the fridge just to check what food you still have inside, right? Thanks to Samsung, the future is here with a lazier alternative.
The South-Korean company has accustomed its fans with surprising and odd appliances when it comes to Consumer Electronics Show that takes place in Las Vegas at the start of each year.
This year is no exception, as Samsung kicked off the event with a fridge featuring cameras and a huge display that spares its user the hassle of opening its door to check in.
There are plenty of reasons why the “Family Hub” refrigerator deserves its spot among the smart home technology of the future, not the least of which is the fact that it touts a 21.5-inch 1080p monitor on the outside and several cameras and sensors within.
However, except the huge monitor glued on its door, the appliance looks a lot like a normal fridge. If we’re to believe the official pictures provided by Samsung – and what reason have we not to – the cooler is most likely to be powered by Android operating system.
Not unlike plenty of everyday objects connected to the Internet of Things, this refrigerator comes with a companion app developed for smartphone and tablet.
You don’t even have to get up from your bed – or be in the house, for that matter – because you can view the monitor’s feed remotely. This feature is especially advantageous for all the times when you go grocery shopping and you have no idea what food you still have left at home.
The app will also let you know if you are low on particular foods and notify you if they are on sale at a preferred store. With your permission, it will even order them for you – provided that you live in Korea (this is the only location where the feature is currently available).
No need to be scraping for post-it notes when you’re in a rush to get out of the house – use the big display to post reminders and messages to your family. This feature is also available via the companion app.
Besides allowing you to search the Web for recipes, the Family Hub fridge also comes equipped with speakers for you to listen to your favorite music while cooking. If you’re wondering about the price, Samsung has yet to reveal the details.
