Microsoft’s Windows 10 event ended just a few hours ago and the internet is still reeling from all the pleasant surprises that Microsoft has presented to the world. Windows 10 is coming out next week and it will be available for people who signed up for the pre-release. Microsoft announced that it will give Windows 10 for free to Windows 7 and Windows 8 users for one year and it will last for the supported lifetime of the device.
So what did Microsoft’s Windows 10 event introduce? An universal app program, which means that you can have the same apps on your Windows tablet, Windows phone and Windows PC; Cortana is coming to the PC, which is something that not many people were expecting; Project Spartan which is a web browser to replace Internet Explorer, but the biggest surprise at Microsoft’s Windows 10 event was the introduction of HoloLens glasses. These glasses create holographic images that get added over the real world.
By far, Microsoft’s most ambitious project so far is tis augmented reality headset. The Microsoft HoloLens is a visor that overlays holographic images over the real world. The introduction video showed people doing all sorts of things with the HoloLens: architects rendering buildings, normal people would go to Mars and inspect Curiosity and the Martian soil and someone even played Minecraft on a tabletop. The HoloLens has sensors to detect the user’s gestures as well as the real world and it also has holographic sound. There are no wires to it, so you don’t need to connect it to your PC or smartphone. Microsoft wasn’t very accurate at pinpointing exactly when the HoloLens will be available, but it did say that it is going to happen in the Windows 10 timeframe.
Microsoft’s Windows 10 event also revealed that its personal digital assistant, Cortana is finally coming to the PC. Cortana has been available for mobile devices for quite a while not and the news that she’s coming to the PC has a lot of people saying that Cortana will bring back Windows’ popularity. She will be living next to the start button in Windows 10 and she will be able to answer your questions, open your apps, show you around on a map and give you information that she believes you are interested in.
