A 5 year old girl died of the flu in Nevada, despite the fact that she had been vaccinated against the influenza virus. Kiera Driscoll is the latest victim of the flu epidemic in the United States.
Her father revealed that on Sunday morning the girl had a low grade fever and that he treated her with a dose of ibuprofen, which made her feel better.
Sunday night, her fever had returned and was coughing up phlegm. At 4am her parents said that they had to use an albuterol nebulized to help her breath and expand her airways. The girl felt better and by 8am she was asleep again. When later the little girl was still unable to breathe, they took her to the hospital for another dose of albuterol and then she was brought home.
Unfortunately, when they got home, the little girl told her parents that she could not breathe and her mother needed to perform CPR on her to clear her airways. When the ambulance arrived, her pulse was gone, but was managed to be resuscitated by the paramedics and taken back to the hospital.
Due to the lack of oxygen to her brain, the activity of the brain was diminished and she had irregular heartbeat. The next day after arriving at the hospital the 5 year old died of the flu.
The cause of death of a thick mucus plus clogging her trachea and preventing the little girl from being able to breathe properly. The official cause of death of little Kiera Driscoll is the flu.
Even though their girl had been vaccinated against the flu, the Driscoll family are urging parents to protect their children by vaccinating them.
The number of flu cases in the U.S. is on the rise and the health officials are calling it a rough flu season. This season’s flu epidemic has already claimed the lives of 45 children. Some hospitals in Nevada are closing their doors to new cases and ambulances are forced to go somewhere where there’s room.
Only 35% of flu cases match this season’s flu vaccine, which means that the current vaccine is a poor match, as the CDC has put it.
