The Amazon Web Services re:Invent conference this week ended the introduction of the Amazon AWS Lambda, a new web service in the public cloud.
Amazon has tried for a very long time to compete with giants such as Apple, Microsoft or Oracle, manufacturing smartphones and releasing new services and providing tech solutions for business customers. The showing of the new service for developers raised a lot of excitement in the media, however.
Werner Vogels, the chief technology officer for Amazon described AWS Lambda , the new service aimed for businesses as:
“an event-driven computing service for dynamic applications.”
This may look like just another service offered by Amazon in their comprehensive line of services but there is more to the AWS Lambda than what is seen at first glance. As claimed by specialists looking far deeper into the service, the Amazon AWS Lambda is a
“tool to implement rules that carry out functions using Amazon’s manifold complex features, without requiring extensive configuration and maintenance.”
This means the cloud service can perform at tremendous speeds by setting off codes that are based on events, helping developers to manage cloud services in a manner most effective. The AWS Lambda leverages the JavaScript code via the Node.js and is capable of helping developers change the way they run, build, manage and design dynamic applications.
People present at the unveiling of the new service described it as being revolutionary or at least being potentially revolutionary. The new service may put in the hands of developers the chance to manage and write applications which would otherwise prove to be very difficult to accomplish. Also, the real great thing about Lambda is the low cost at which it can perform. This particular feature can very soon skyrocket Amazon among the biggest companies in the field.
As claimed by a report by the Synergy Research Group, Amazon holds 27 percent of the global market for cloud services, while Microsoft holds only 10 percent.
Amazon is very confident in the new service’s success despite having some shortcomings and we will see if the service is as revolutionary as it is believed to be in some time.
