Everyone loves high resolution displays, but Apple pushed all the limits with its latest iMac. The new version launched on Thursday comes with the Retina 5K display. Yes, a 5K display. We barely had a chance to get used to the 4K generation and now we are already moving further.
The 27-inch display has a resolution of 5,120 by 2,880 pixels. This is the world’s highest resolution commercially available display. The total number of pixels is 14.7 million and the display is just 5mm thin. That is seven times more than Full HD screens.
Although the display is the star of the new iMac, the overall hardware offer is convincing as well. The system is powered by Intel Haswell processors. The base model has a 3.5 GHz i5, but it can reach up to 3.9 GHz in Turbo mode.
If you are willing to pay an extra $250, you can enjoy an even greater speed. The i7 unit normally runs at 4.0 GHz and at 4.4 GHz in Turbo. It means that you will enjoy 3.5 teraflops of power.
The impressive 5K display needs adequate support. The iMac comes with the AMD Radeon R9 M290X video card. The unit offers 2 GB of GDDR5, but if you need extra graphic processing power, you can choose the AMD Radeon R9 M295X. For extra $250 you will have a 4 GB of GDDR5 video card.
Even if the video cards are not the most powerful on the market, they are pretty close. In fact, the new iMac will support both its Retina 5K display, as well as an external monitor with a resolution of up to 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, through its Thunderbolt port.
The desktop comes with 8 GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. For extra $200 you can have the amount doubled and even quadrupled for $600.
You will have plenty of storage option as well. The 1TB Fusion drive comes by default, but you can have a 3 TB one for $300. SSD option up to 1 TB are available too.
IMac is equipped with Thunderbolt 2 for faster data transfer; two ports are available. There are four USB 3 ports on the Apple device, a headphone port and a SDXC slot. The device will connect to the Internet or other devices wirelessly through 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.
How much for all of these? The base price is $2,499, but it can go up to $4,399.
