SANDY — A former Salt Lake City police officer was found gunned down at his home Wednesday.
63-year-old Kevin Meik’s, was a day later confirmed being murdered. The police initially thought it was a possible medical crisis call.
Sandy police Sgt. Jon Arnold said, the police found no indication that there had been a break-in at the residence. “The house wasn’t ransacked there was nothing obvious that was out of place,” said Arnold.
“Initially they thought it was possibly a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was several hours later they were able to determine it was not self-inflicted.”
Meik had retired from the Salt Lake City Police Department about 20 years ago. SLCPD Detective Veronica Montoya confirmed Meik’s retired officer status, but she did not instantly have any other particulars about his law enforcement career.
Police say they don’t have any suspects at present.
“He was very nice,” said neighbor Michelle Smith. “We are in Sandy, we are in a really nice neighborhood, I didn’t think anything like this would happen.”
“Super unusual,” said Nicho Almy another neighbor. “Little nervous that such a thing would happen in our neighborhood, that’s for sure.”
“We are devastated,” said Karen Schultz, daughter of Meik.
Meik was last seen Tuesday night with his family at a dinner outside. After dinner, Meik, who lives alone, went home to 9032 S. Waters Circle (1515 East).
Meik was suffering from many medical problems. Meik who was supposed to meet a family friend didn’t show up. His friend called family members, then called police and asked them to drive by the house to check on him.
Meik’s body was found in a bedroom.
“Our detectives are interviewing family and friends about anyone he may have interfaced with recently,” Arnold said, adding that police had not yet identified any suspects. “We are in the infancy of this investigation.”
