The Supreme Court’s stay order on the lower court’s decision over gay marriages in Utah has left many same-sex couples in limbo.
According to the Salt Lake County district attorney, those couples who have marriage licenses but didn’t wed before the apex court verdict can’t enjoy legal union now.
Moreover, those who took the advantage of the lower court’s verdict that legalized gay marriages in Utah are in legal limbo as the administration is still to decide on how to deal with such couples.
The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a federal district judge’s decision that gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry.
The apex court pronounced the terse order without any dissent, suggesting that the judicial system of the state needs more time to deliver a landmark verdict of recognizing a right to gay marriage.
Utah Atty. Gen. Sean Reyes says, “It is very unfortunate that so many Utah citizens have been put into this legal limbo.”
