World AIDS Day: Durex Launches Social Media Campaign for Condom Emoji

December 1, 2015 Posted by Gabrielle Stewart

Using the eggplant emoji on your smartphone could signify more than your innocent love for the vegetable. Cue the the wide-eyed emoji here, please – or you can even express your disappointment with the one with downcast eyes.

For those who have no idea what this is about, it’s something to do with it’s the eggplants phallic shape. In a similar matter, the donut isn’t just used to convey someone’s love for the sweet treat. Brace yourselves, people. It’s about to get even kinkier.

There are plenty of other emojis available in the same vein; there’s a tongue and a little spurt of water… let’s just assume you know where this is going. A lot of people – especially, but not limited to, the young ones – have discovered how useful emojis can be when certain things need to be communicated. And by communicated, we actually mean sexted.

In full support of such activities, Durex has decided it’s time for a safer way to send this kind of suggestive messages. The number one condom manufacturer, whose brand is universally recognized, has launched social media campaign for the use of a condom emoji in naughty messages. Durex would like us all to come onboard their campaign, voting for the condom emoji to become a reality.

Given the age of smartphones and electronical devices we live in, the small emoji icons have become a large part of our communication. Durex thinks it’s “crucial” for young couples to be able to communicate with proper emoji to express emotions or physical things.

According to research conducted inside the company, Durex reported that roughly 80 percent of 16-25 year olds think it’s easier to use emojis when it comes to expressing themselves. At the same time, around 84 percent said using icons in conversations about sex felt more comfortable.

Durex’s campaign was launched in the light of World Aids Day, December 1, and the company would like us all to use the #CondomEmoji when talking about this matter on all social media platforms in order to raise awareness about safe sex. One of the secondary reasons for the campaign is to try and ease inhibitions that people might have about the word condom.

Even though Durex might have a rather wide reach in the world, it’s unclear whether its campaign will work, that is, whether we’ll eventually get a latex-inspired emoji. The idea behind it is pretty cool though, and definitely worth a mention.
