Thermal anomalies could indicate hidden tomb in Giza’s Pyramid as combined scanning technologies revealed recently. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the last remaining monument pertaining to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The pyramid was completed around 2560 BC and has been standing tall ever since.
Although it has been explored several times before and it has 3 known chambers, recent analysis using new scanning techniques has revealed thermal anomalies which could indicate that the site may have chambers that have not been visited yet.
The anomaly was located on the ground level of the pyramid, on the eastern side. Researchers from Cairo University and the Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute combined a series of non-invasive and non-destructive scanning methods and techniques in order to better understand how the pyramid was built. Among the methods used were 3D Reconstruction and infrared thermography.
The research was conducted as part of a multi-phase project called the #ScanPyramidsProject and the discoveries mark the completion of the first phase. The team used thermal scans to observe temperature differences in different areas and blocks from the pyramids. While other pyramids studied during the project showed some anomalies ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 degrees, the ones recorded at Giza’s Great Pyramid were as much as 6 degrees colder or warmer compared to neighboring areas.
According to one of the specialists involved in the project, a professor at Cairo University named Hany Helal, these findings indicate that the abnormal regions are significantly different from other parts of the pyramid and that there could be something located there, such as a chamber, causing the significant variations in temperature.
The opinion is also shared by the Egyptian minister of antiquities, Mamdouh el-Damaty, who has stated that the pyramid’s first row of stones appears to be normal and uniform, while the areas in which the anomalies were recorded seem to have a different formation. This could point to the existence of undiscovered chambers within the ancient construction.
The minister was reluctant to make assumptions just yet as to what could be causing the anomalies exactly and thus refused to share his hypothesis before more research was conducted in order to gather additional information about the abnormalities discovered.
He did however acknowledge that the differences in temperature could be consequential to voids in the structure beneath the surface of the movement of internal currents beneath the blocks of stone used to construct the pyramid.
