A transgender man shares his surprise pregnancy story with the world after unexpectedly becoming pregnant while transitioning into a man. Kayden Coleman had already been on the path of transition for quite a few years when he discovered that he was pregnant. Kayden had been biologically born a woman but was already taking testosterone for over five years as part of transitioning into a man when he got the news.
He had been living as a gay man with his partner Elijah Coleman for over a year by the time he became pregnant and was not expecting the pregnancy because he had been taking testosterone for such a long time. The couple initially attributed Kayden’s growing belly to weight gain caused by a lack of exercise.
But as time went on and his belly got bigger and bigger Kayden began experiencing back pains and the couple actually started joking about the possibility of Kayden’s growing belly being the result of a pregnancy. Soon enough the matter became more serious to the unsuspecting parents-to-be as Kayden started feeling like there was a pillow growing under his stomach and his back pain worsened.
The couple became increasingly worried about the symptoms Kayden was experiencing and finally decided that it was time to take a home pregnancy test which gave a positive result. The couple then went to a gynecologist and got confirmation of the fact that he was already 21 weeks pregnant.
It came as quite a shock to the couple as they didn’t even imagine such a thing was possible. Kayden had already been taking the testosterone hormones for more than five years so a pregnancy shouldn’t have normally occurred. The couple realized that, more likely than not, the baby was conceived during a six-week period when Kayden did not take his testosterone as he was preparing for a double mastectomy surgery.
Despite the major and sudden change in their lives, Kayden and Elijah adjusted to their new roles as parents. They had not yet told Elijah’s family that Kayden was transgender and breaking the pregnancy news to loved ones was not easy. But with so little time to get everything ready for the arrival of their child, they decided not to focus on the hurtful things that were being said to them but to focus on turning their apartment into a family home ready to welcome a new member.
They got married in July of 2013 and welcomed their baby girl Azaelia in December that same year. Although it was a struggle to adjust to parenthood, especially in the first year, the couple is now happily raising their 22 month old daughter Azaelia.
