Based on the recent press releases, FDA will reconsider ‘Viagra for women’ during a special committee meeting that will be held on Thursday afternoon. The pill is said to increase the female libido much like Viagra does for men, but the side effects of the drug could be a lot worse than scientists initially believed.
‘Viagra for women’ as scientists have popularly named the pink pill created by pharmaceutics experts working within the German company, Boehringer Ingelheim is now triggering many discussions. Officials at the Food and Drug Administration have agreed to reconsider ‘Viagra for women’, but the meeting will not necessarily lead to the acknowledgment of the pill.
The drug was first released in 2010 after scientists noticed an increase in female libido during anti-depressant tests. Flibanserin has been officially described by its German producers as a drug for pre-menopausal women. It has been already tested by the FDA in 2010 and 2013, but the administration has concluded back then that the effects of the pill are too inconclusive when compared with its side effects.
Past tests have shown that Flibanserin increased the libido of female participants by 4.4 percent, whereas participants in the placebo group admitted to having 3.7 percent satisfying intercourses, even though they were only administered sugar pills.
The same women registered 2.7 percent sexually satisfying encounters before the tests; therefore the FDA thinks the results of the experiment are not conclusive. Moreover, results have shown that most women have confronted themselves with dizziness, nausea and sleepiness.
The German company has sold the drug to the United States firm, Sprout Pharmaceuticals since the last revision has been made. The latter is requesting the Food and Drug Administration to reconsider the ‘Viagra for women’ pill as they have strong reasons to believe that the pill can improve women’s sexual drive.
The U.S. drug producer did not say whether new tests and experiments have been performed on the pill. The FDA, on the other hand, is tempted to deny the company’s requests as they do not believe the drug brings true advantages to its consumers.
Much like the male version of the pill, the aphrodisiac abilities of the female drug were discovered while being tested for other possible medical effects. The drug maker designed Flibanserin as an anti-depressant, but the pill was more effective in point of libido surge. Viagra for men was also discovered while being tested as a medicine for heart conditions.
Even though, the pill may not be officially acknowledge by the FDA, many more drug producers are willing to invest in Flibanserin. Pfizer and Procter and Gamble are the first two companies, who applied for the development of female Viagra.
Authorities are also taking into consideration the negative effects that the drug could have on normal women. The pill may be used, as in the case of Viagra, as a libido-enhancer during orgies, hence, FDA’s reluctance in approving the pill.
