Oculus promised us the real virtual reality a while ago. Now Facebook owns the company that was massively supported by fans through crowd funding. The virtual reality company released two prototypes so far. After DK1 and DK2, now comes a third called Oculus Rift Crescent Bay. As you can imagine, there is substantial interest around the device. Right now virtual reality is one of the most futuristic ways of interacting with computers imagined. This means, on the other hand, that we should upgrade our dreams as soon as possible.
The two previous units were rather bulky. In fact, this is the major problem with a virtual reality headset, but Crescent Bay is recognized as an important upgrade in terms of hardware and physical characteristics. Crescent Bay is hand made by Oculus, but a look at the device would not reveal the characteristic easily. The goggles are clearly made for a seated experience, but the latest version allows the user to move more than before, so it is clearly on the way to a fully mobile 360 degrees experience. Around 100.000 Oculus Rift Crescent are shipped around the world.
Not only that Crescent Bay is lighter, but it includes headphones. Without a need for external headphones, the goggles are now easier to maneuver and offer a holistic experience. Oculus offers a complete experience with the help of a special type of 3D audio using the technology called “HRTF spatialization and integrated reverberation algorithms.” Naturally, gamers will be among the first to experience the final version of Oculus Rift and surely they will be in awe, according to the first reviewers trying out the goggles.
But gamers are just some of the most enthusiastic groups about VR headsets. Filmmakers will have another way of providing compelling experiences. “We’ve seen some phenomenal paradigm-shifting stories projects come through in our lab program, but I think there is nothing that compares with this next paradigm shift with virtual reality and immersion into the story world,” Kamal Sinclair, co-director of the Sundance Institute‘s New Frontier project, said, Boston Herald notes.
Oculus Rift may be among the VR headsets pioneers, but other companies attempt to release similar devices. Samsung Gear VR is the South Korean’s company’s product made in collaboration with Oculus, in fact. Gear VR will turn the Galaxy Note smartphone into a VR display, with the help of a proper headset.
