The killing of a black teenager by a police officers sparked outrage throughout the country, but in Ferguson, Missouri a vigil turned to a riot where the police arrested 32 people. The riot took place late on Sunday and it managed to spread to towns around Ferguson, it was revealed by police officials on today.
The crowds of people broke cars’ windows and stores, they looted shops and even set a building on fire. These demonstrations are a reaction to the death of an unarmed 18-year-old boy, Michael Brown, who was shot in Ferguson by a police officer on Saturday.
Around 300 police officers in riot gear tried to control the crowd that spread from Ferguson, a mostly black suburb of St. Louis. Around 25 businesses were damaged, one officer was struck by a brick and one hurt his knee during an arrest, it was revealed on Monday by the St. Louis Country Police spokesperson, Brian Schellman. He continued to say that the words I heard them use about the scene were ‘chaotic,” even ‘scary.
The crowds were planned to protest later in the day on Monday, but the plans are not quite clear at the moment, as 32 people were arrested and most probably will face charges that could include larceny and burglary and assault.
Michael Brown was shot inside a police car, after a struggle over a gun. There isn’t too much information about the killing, as we speak, and it was not clear why the young man was even in the police car in the first place.
Police said Brown was shot after a struggle over a gun in a police car. It was not immediately clear why Brown was in the car. At least one shot was fired during the struggle, and then the office fired more shots before leaving the car.
A young witness told KMOV TV station that the rioters destroyed everything, smashing windows of restaurants and damaging cars. They broke in a AutoZone and Ross Dress for Less where people walked out with goods.
The victim’s mother told the television station that her son was:
A good child getting ready to go to college and […] he was visiting his grandmother when the shooting took place. He didn’t bother nobody. They told me how many times my son was shot – eight. You not God. You not decide you are going to take somebody from her.
