The deceased mine worker at Iron County mine has been identified. 56-year-old Mark Rowley, a resident of Cedar City, was killed at the Comstock/Mountain Lion iron ore mine about 5:50 pm on Saturday.
The worker died after apparently getting trapped in a conveyer belt.
Emergency responders arrived at 2700 S. Comstock Road to find Rowley trapped in the machinery.
According to a statement released by the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, the emergency staff tried to save his life, but he died on the spot.
The sheriff’s office believes Rowley’s death was just an accident as he was working alone at the time.
When Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere was approached, she said that they are still investigating how Rowley got caught in the conveyor belt.
The investigation is still ‘very preliminary’, she noted.
